SIDING MATERIALS

SIDING MATERIALS WE INSTALL

Every roof and every wall is a different problem. Here is what we work with, and where each one makes sense.

Vinyl siding installed by Cobblestone Construction in Utica NY

The lowest maintenance option, available in the widest range of colors and profiles we install.

James Hardie fiber cement siding installed by Cobblestone Construction in Utica NY

Fiber cement siding that holds paint and stands up to Upstate New York winters year after year.

Cedar shake siding installed by Cobblestone Construction in Utica NY

Real cedar for homes where the look has to match the period. It needs upkeep, and rewards it.

Engineered wood composite siding installed by Cobblestone Construction in Utica NY

Engineered wood that nails like real lumber and resists rot, sitting between vinyl and cedar.

CHOOSING A MATERIAL

Which siding material is right for your home?

Upkeep is the real decision. Vinyl asks nothing of you and never takes paint. Cedar asks for attention every few years. The other two sit in between, and everything else follows from where you land on that.

Vinyl is the most common siding in the Mohawk Valley for good reason. It costs the least to install, it comes in the widest range of colors and profiles, and it does not get painted, so the color you choose is the color you keep. The trade is that you cannot change your mind about that color later without replacing the siding.

Fiber cement, which most people know as James Hardie, holds paint well and stands up to our winters. It is heavier and takes longer to install, so it costs more than vinyl, and you can repaint it whenever you want a different look. Engineered wood sits between the two. It nails like real lumber, resists rot, and takes paint, at a price under fiber cement.

Cedar shake is for houses where the look has to be right. On a period home, nothing else reads the same way. It needs staining or sealing on a cycle, and if you are not going to keep up with that, one of the other three will serve you better.

What is behind the old siding matters as much as what goes on top of it. We pull a section before quoting so we know what the sheathing looks like, and if there is water damage or failed housewrap under there, you hear about it before the job starts rather than halfway through.

Tell us how long you plan to stay in the house. That single answer narrows these four faster than any other question we can ask.
