A wash to knock down mildew and dirt, and a fresh coat of stain or sealer roughly every three to five years depending on the finish and the exposure. South-facing walls take more sun and ask sooner. It is real work or a real bill, and it is the whole honest cost of owning the best looking siding there is.
Cedar carries natural oils that resist decay and insects better than almost any other wood, which is why it has been siding houses for centuries. It is still wood, so the finish, the flashing details, and airflow behind the wall matter, and our installation handles all three. Kept finished, cedar behaves itself.
You can, and on the right house the silvered look is the whole point. Weathering depends on sun exposure, so different walls gray at different speeds, and a bleaching oil can even that out. If you want the silver look without the wait, a gray stain gets you there on day one and protects the wood while it is at it.
