Standing seam is the roof for your home, and exposed fastener panels are the roof for your barn, garage, or budget. Standing seam panels lock together at raised seams with every fastener hidden under the metal, so there are no holes in the roof surface and nothing to work loose. Exposed fastener panels are screwed through the face of the metal, which keeps the price down and works hard on outbuildings.
The honest difference is maintenance. Every screw in an exposed fastener roof seals with a small rubber washer, and after a decade or so those washers dry out and want attention. A standing seam roof is clipped rather than pinned, so the panels ride out our freeze and thaw cycles for fifty years and more without a service call. We install both, plus copper accents over bay windows and entries, and we will tell you straight which one earns its price on your building.

Exposed fastener panels are screwed straight through the face of the metal with rubber-washer screws. That one difference drives the price, the maintenance, and how long each roof goes between service calls.
Standing seam typically runs 50 years and more with next to no attention. Exposed fastener panels run 30 to 40 years, with the rubber screw washers wanting inspection every 10 to 15. Either way you are past the life of an asphalt roof, and our winters are exactly what metal is good at.
Not when they are maintained. Every screw seals with a small rubber washer, and sun and weather dry those washers out over 10 to 15 years. Left alone they can open a leak path, and a checkup catches them first. If you never want that on the calendar, standing seam removes the screws from the equation entirely.
Not on a house. We install metal over solid decking and underlayment, which soaks up the sound, so rain on a metal roof is about as loud as rain on an asphalt one. The tin-roof racket people remember comes from open-framed barns with nothing under the panels.
Better than anything else we install. Snow slides off instead of piling up, and the smooth surface gives ice damming far less to grab onto. Over doorways and walkways we add snow guards so a roof full of snow lets go in small amounts instead of all at once.
We do. Most copper work we install is accents: awnings and small roofs over bay windows, porticos, and entries, where the metal ages into a patina that nothing else matches. Copper turns an ordinary front elevation into the best looking house on the street.
