HARDIE BOARD SIDING

Hardie Board Siding Installation

Cobblestone Construction installs James Hardie fiber cement siding on homes across Utica and the Mohawk Valley. Hardie board gives a house the flat, painted-wood look that vinyl cannot quite match, in panels engineered for northern freeze and thaw climates. Our own crews install it, and estimates are free.

FIBER CEMENT SIDING

Is Hardie board worth the extra cost over vinyl?

If you want the house to read as painted wood from the sidewalk, yes. Hardie board is fiber cement, a panel made of cement, sand, and cellulose, and it hangs flat, rigid, and heavy the way wood clapboard does. The premium over vinyl buys that look, plus a wall that does not burn, rot, or feed insects, and a factory ColorPlus finish that holds color far longer than field paint.

The honest trade is upkeep. Vinyl never needs paint, and Hardie board eventually will, though the ColorPlus finish pushes that decision decades out and repainting fiber cement is more like repainting concrete than chasing peeling wood. James Hardie also builds climate-specific panels, and the HZ5 line we install here is engineered for freeze and thaw regions like ours. Vinyl is the value pick, and Hardie board is the house you want to look permanent. We install both, so the recommendation follows your house and your budget.

I have had them out twice now to replace sections of my roof. Both times they did amazing work. They left the area clean when they were done, even taking extra care around all of the plants as to not damage anything. Great work and communication.

We just got a new roof with this company. Pete and Gina are fantastic. Their financing through Green Sky was quick and easy. Their workers worked really fast and did a great job, all the way to the end with great clean up. They were done in one day.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HARDIE BOARD QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Straight answers to what homeowners and building owners ask us most. Still not sure about something? Call (315) 733-3106 and a real person will pick up.

What is Hardie board made of?

Cement, sand, and cellulose fiber pressed into boards, which is why the industry calls it fiber cement. It behaves closer to masonry than to plastic: heavy, rigid, dead flat on the wall, and completely uninterested in flames, rot, and insects.

Does Hardie board need painting?

Eventually, but not for a long time. The ColorPlus factory finish is baked on in controlled conditions and holds color far longer than field paint. When repainting day does come, decades out, fiber cement takes paint beautifully and holds it, because the board underneath never moves or peels the way wood does.

How does Hardie board handle Utica winters?

It is built for them. James Hardie engineers panels by climate zone, and the HZ5 line made for freeze and thaw regions is what we install here. The board barely moves with temperature, resists moisture, and holds its finish through the swings that make wood crack and paint peel.

Is Hardie board fire resistant?

Yes. Fiber cement is noncombustible, so it will not ignite or feed a flame the way wood and vinyl can. It is a real consideration for houses close to neighbors, grills on the deck, and anywhere embers could reach a wall.

How long does Hardie board last?

The board itself runs 30 to 50 years. The finish is the only maintenance item, and with ColorPlus that conversation is decades away. Between those points the routine is nothing more than an occasional rinse and a look at the caulk lines.

Should I choose Hardie board or vinyl?

Hardie board wins on looks and substance: flatter, heavier, closer to painted wood, and noncombustible. Vinyl wins on price and zero upkeep. Neither answer is wrong, which is why we install both and give you the comparison on your actual house instead of a pitch for whichever one we happen to sell.
