Both give you the painted-wood look. Hardie board is fiber cement: heavier, noncombustible, and closer to masonry. Composite is engineered wood: lighter, warmer looking, and tougher against impact from hail and debris. Fire edge to fiber cement, impact edge to composite. We install both, so you get the honest comparison on your house.
It costs more and gives you more. Composite is a solid panel with real depth of grain, it takes paint if you ever want a new color, and it stands up to impacts that crack vinyl. Vinyl remains the value pick with zero upkeep. Which one is right depends on the house and the budget, and we will tell you straight.
Not for a long time. The factory finish is baked on in controlled conditions and holds for years, and when repainting day eventually comes the stable panel underneath takes paint well and keeps it. In between, the routine is an occasional rinse and a glance at the caulk lines.
