Siding is priced by the square foot of wall, and the four materials we install sit at very different price points. Vinyl is the least expensive. Cedar shake is the most. Fiber cement and engineered wood fall between them. Past the material, the price moves on the size and shape of the house, how many windows, corners and gables have to be trimmed out, and what the sheathing underneath looks like once the old siding comes off. That last one cannot be known in advance, so we pull a section before quoting rather than after. The estimate is free, written and itemized.
It can, and we do not recommend it. Going over the top hides whatever is happening underneath, and if there is moisture in the sheathing you have just sealed it in. We take the old siding off, look at the wall, and fix what we find before new material goes on.
Both hold up here. Vinyl costs less, needs almost no upkeep, and comes in the widest range of colors and profiles. James Hardie fiber cement costs more and is heavier to install, but it holds paint well and handles freeze and thaw cycles without moving. On an older home where the look matters, Hardie is usually worth the difference.
